What is a Prosthodontist?

The dental specialty focused on rebuilding, replacing, and restoring teeth – and fewer than 3% of dentists in the U.S. have the training. Dr. Jesspreet Parmar, DMD is one of them, right here in Lakeland, FL.

At Brilliant Smiles Lakeland, you can get specialist-level restorative care and comprehensive family dentistry in the same chair.

What Does a Prosthodontist Actually Do?

Before and after dental crowns, dental implants, and porcelain veneers | full smile makeoverHere’s the simplest way to think about it: General dentistry keeps healthy teeth healthy. Prosthodontics is what happens when teeth are missing, broken, worn down, or failing — and the mouth needs to be rebuilt.

A prosthodontist is a dentist who finished dental school, then completed three additional years of full-time, ADA-accredited residency training in a single focus: restoring and replacing teeth. It is one of only twelve dental specialties formally recognized by the American Dental Association.

Prosthodontics focuses on:

  • Dental implants – planning, placement coordination, and restoration
  • Crowns, bridges, and veneers
  • Full and partial dentures
  • Full-mouth reconstruction
  • Bite and jaw function (occlusion)
  • Aesthetic design — how a rebuilt smile actually looks

Prosthodontist

Specialist in rebuilding and replacing teeth

Handles the complex cases in-house

Most patients never need a prosthodontist. But when you do – when several teeth are failing, when a denture has never fit right, when a bite feels wrong and no one can say why – that’s the difference between being referred somewhere else and being treated where you already are.

The Cases That Call For a Prosthodontist

These are the situations where three extra years of training changes the outcome — not just the treatment plan.

Missing Multiple Teeth

Replacing one tooth is straightforward. Replacing several means planning how they work together – spacing, bite forces, bone support, and how the final result looks. Implants, bridges, and implant-supported options, mapped as one plan.

Dentures That Never Fit Right

Loose dentures, sore spots, adhesive that stops working by lunchtime. Prosthodontics is the specialty built around denture fit and function, including implant-secured options that don't move.

Failing or Worn-Down Teeth

Years of grinding, acid wear, or old dental work reaching the end of its life. When most of the mouth needs attention at once, it needs to be rebuilt in the right sequence — not one tooth at a time.

Full-Mouth Reconstruction

The most complex work in dentistry: restoring an entire mouth's function and appearance together. This is the core of what prosthodontic residency trains for.

A Bite That Feels Wrong

Jaw soreness, teeth that don't meet evenly, crowns that keep failing in the same spot. Often the underlying issue is occlusion — how the bite functions — which is a specialty focus.

Cosmetic Work That Has to Last

Veneers and aesthetic crowns look best when they're designed around function, not just shade. Smiles built to hold up under real bite forces.

Not sure which of these describes you? That’s what a consultation is for.

A Specialist Who's Also Your Dentist

Most prosthodontists only take referrals. You see your regular dentist for cleanings and checkups, then get sent elsewhere when something complex comes up — new office, new records, new opinions, and a treatment plan built by someone who’s never seen your mouth healthy.

Brilliant Smiles Lakeland works differently. Dr. Parmar is a prosthodontist practicing comprehensive dentistry. Your cleanings, your fillings, your implants, and your full-mouth work all happen in one place, planned by one person who knows your history and your preferences.

01

One Plan, One Office

Complex cases go wrong at the handoffs. When the dentist who maintains your teeth is also the specialist who rebuilds them, nothing gets lost between offices.

02

Problems Caught Earlier

A prosthodontist sees wear patterns, bite issues, and failing restorations differently — often years before they become emergencies. That perspective is in every routine exam here, not just the big cases.

03

Care That Doesn't End at the Crown

The office that placed your implants is the office that maintains them. Long-term follow-up from the person who did the work.

Comprehensive family dentistry. Specialty-level restorative care. Same office, same doctor, same chair.
